Players overestimate how often they won when LDWs are present, and their physiological arousal to an LDW matches a real win — Dixon et al., Addiction 2010;105(10):1819 (PMID 20712818). Britain's Gambling Commission banned the audio illusion outright (RTS 14F, in force 31 Oct 2021): a machine may not use sounds/imagery implying a win "where the return is in fact equal to, or below, a stake."

Why the unpredictable schedule is the whole game
B.F. Skinner identified the variable-ratio schedule — reward after an unpredictable number of responses — as the schedule that produces the highest, steadiest response rate and is the most resistant to extinction (you keep pressing long after the rewards stop). He explicitly named the slot machine as the human exemplar (Skinner, Science and Human Behavior, 1953). The machine isn't "luck wrapped in lights" — it's a conditioning device, and the schedule is the point. Faster play deepens the harm: in a controlled study, 60% of pathological gamblers played until told to stop at a 2-second spin speed, versus 6.7% of non-pathological gamblers (Harris & Griffiths, J Gambling Studies 2018;34(2):393).
DEMO 2 The hidden clock
Watch the clock bar above as you flip the switch. In Casino Mode it goes dark — no time, no spin count, no running total. In honest mode it tells you exactly how long you've been here and what it cost. Same play; only the awareness changes.
The practice is real and well-documented: traditional casino floors are built without clocks or windows, with a deliberately disorienting, maze-like layout (the "playground" design vs. Friedman's classic floor; see Schüll, Addiction by Design, Princeton University Press, 2012). But be careful: that no-clocks causes people to lose track of time and bet more is asserted, not proven — it's plausible and widely repeated, yet we're not aware of a clean causal study isolating clock-removal as the mechanism. We flag it honestly: documented practice, intuitive story, unproven causal claim.

"The pain of paying" — why credits cost you more
Abstracting money into chips, credits or cards reduces the psychological "pain of paying," so people spend more freely than with cash — the chip is one step removed, a digital credit two (Thaler's mental-accounting work; Prelec & Loewenstein's "pain of paying"). In gambling specifically, representing money as non-cash credit is associated with higher and faster wagering (Lapuz & Griffiths, 2010, on the effect of cash vs. electronic credit on slot-machine play). It's the same reason a $1 menu feels different from a "100-token" arcade card.
DEMO 6 Who the business actually runs on
If addiction were a side-effect, you'd expect revenue spread across many casual players. It isn't. A large, disputed share of machine revenue comes from a small group of heavily-harmed players. Estimates vary widely — so here's the honest range, not a single scary number.

The exact figure depends on jurisdiction, machine type and how "problem" is measured — which is precisely why we show the spread. Even at the conservative end, a fifth of the take comes from people the product is hurting. At the high end for electronic machines, the business is the harm.
The numbers and where they come from
~20%: Australia's Productivity Commission (Gambling inquiry) put problem gamblers' share of total gambling spending in the low tens of percent — a deliberately conservative, population-wide figure. 40–50%: a range that recurs across academic and regulatory estimates for the share of revenue from problem-and-at-risk players, especially for electronic gaming machines. ~90%: the University of Massachusetts SEIGMA program's 2024 analysis of Massachusetts casino play found the large majority of casino revenue concentrated in a small minority of high-intensity, disproportionately high-risk players. We present these as a range precisely because they measure different populations, places and machine types — overclaiming a single number would be the same dishonesty we're calling out.

⚠ Folklore we refuse to repeat
✗ MYTH:"Casinos pump extra oxygen onto the floor to keep you awake and betting." False — a Mario Puzo novel (Fools Die) popularized it. Measured casino air is ordinary atmospheric oxygen (~20.9%); pumping flammable oxygen into a crowded room would be a fire hazard, not a strategy. We won't repeat it.
✗ MYTH:"The loosest / luckiest machines are placed at the entrances." Floor-placement lore, not peer-reviewed fact. Modern slots are networked and individually configured; "near the door = looser" is a story, not data.
⚑ ASSERTED, NOT PROVEN:"No clocks or windows makes you lose track of time and bet more." The no-clocks/no-windows design is real and documented. The causal effect on your behavior is plausible and widely repeated but not, to our knowledge, cleanly demonstrated. We label it as a claim, not a finding.
